Nearly half of the 50 hectares planted to vines surround the Bortoluzzi Winery in Gradisca d’Isonzo. The remaining vineyards are planted on the hill slopes and in the plains of two renowned DOC wine zones of Friuli Venezia Giulia: Collio and Isonzo. Collio is the perfect area for the production of white wines, thanks to the nutritious soil known as “Ponca” (composed by sandstone and marlstone) and to a unique microclimate: favourable altitude, protection from the cold winds and optimal exposure to the sunlight. Along the Isonzo river instead, the cold Bora wind meets the mild marine breezes and the plain of Gorizia, shaped by the river, is characterized by gravelly soil rich in minerals.

To manage vineyards that are located in different wine growing zones means having to know the whole region down to the detail. Pest and disease control, carried out with targeted treatments and only where and when necessary, is a fundamental aspect of our work. The vines, which are lovingly manicured, are watered by using a drip irrigation system. This allows us to reduce waste and to preserve the upper part of the vines. Green harvesting allows us to reduce the yield per plant and enhance the quality of the grapes. Harvest is carried out by hand when only when the grapes are ripe to perfection.
